A radon isotope ( 220 Ra, called thoron) is also produced in the decay chain of 232 Th but its half-life is very short (t½ = 55 s) and it cannot accumulate as effectively as 222 Ra. The radon isotope 219 Ra (or actinium) is also produced in the decay chain of 235 U, but its half-life is still shorter (t½ = 4 s). Radon mostly appears with the decay chain of the radium and uranium series (222 Rn), and marginally with the thorium series (220 Rn). The element emanates naturally from the ground, and some building materials, all over the world, wherever traces of uranium or thorium are found, and particularly in regions with soils containing granite or shale The decay chain of 222 Rn is shown is figure 2.1. The half-life for each radioactive member of the chain is indicated, as is the alpha-particle energy (in keV).
