VMworld 2014 – Virtual thoughts

Fault Tolerance (FT) was introduced as a new feature in vSphere to provide something that was missing in VI3: continuous availability for a VM in case of a host failure. HA was introduced in VI3 to protect against host failures, but it caused the VM to be down for a short period of time while it was restarted on another host. However, there may be a need to create a Kubernetes cluster that spans multiple HPE SimpliVity clusters to provide additional fault tolerance or simply to create really large Kubernetes clusters. In this case, worker nodes will only have access to datastores hosted by the local HPE SimpliVity cluster. VMware vSphere Fault Tolerance (FT) provides continuous availability for applications (with up to four virtual CPUs) by creating a live shadow instance of a virtual machine that mirrors the primary virtual machine.
VM must have a single vCPU. VM max. RAM is 64 GB (not sure). VM must run a supported guest OS. See KB “Processors and guest operating systems that support VMware Fault Tolerance”. Snapshots must be removed or committed.
so you have two fault tolerant nodes running the exact same to achieve High Availability. HA = 2 times resources for each HA VM. To enable the HPE SimpliVity CSI to take snapshots install the CSI Snapshot Controller on each cluster.

VMware Fault Tolerance provides continuous availability for virtual machines by creating and maintaining a Secondary VM that is identical to, and continuously available to replace, the Primary VM in the event of a failover situation, both VMs exchange heartbeats to monitor each other’s status.

What is Arbiter™? The Arbiter is a Windows based software solution deployed to a third site which has fully independent failure scenarios from either of the two Stretched Cluster sites. HA was introduced in VI3 to protect against host failures, but it caused the VM to be down for a short period of time while it was restarted on another host.
The VM will never be down because of an underlying hardware problem. This is not High Availability (HA) where the VM simply restarts on another host within a cluster. SimpliVity Availability Zones Not Configured – Offers guidance to improve fault tolerance.

If a hardware outage occurs, vSphere FT automatically triggers failover to eliminate downtime and prevent data loss.
